I am actually overjoyed that Columbia has not succumbed to vanity sizing for their Silver Ridge shorts. These shorts feature an "athletic" fit, as opposed to the roomier, more relaxed "classic" fit of much of their product line. I am size 24-25 waist (or size 2 in H&M) and the size 2 in these fits me perfectly. The hidden-adjustible elastic waistband is VERY handy for wash-and-wear multiday trips where the shorts expand a little with wear. The 5" length is also very comfortable; not embarassingly short like many "juniors" sized shorts today, but not too long and boyish either!A word of caution: I have these in the dark grey "gravel" color, and recently ordered the same exact size (2x5) in the light tan "fossil" color, and they fit at least one size bigger! For those of you concerned about a tighter fit, if there truly is a size difference between colors, try the Fossil color first. I have the full-length silver ridge pants in Fossil (also size 2) and I can attest to their durability and opacity (they are lighter in color but do not show through even when wet!).
